If not promptly addressed, clogged printheads can disrupt production schedules and, in severe cases, result in permanent damage, rendering the printer inoperable and increasing operational costs. Proper maintenance is essential to minimize clogging and ensure smooth printing operations. This article outlines six common causes of printhead failure and four essential maintenance practices.

Six Common Causes of Printhead Clogging

1. Ink Depletion

When the printhead runs out of ink, the piezoelectric ceramic components continue working, but no droplets are ejected without ink. In such cases, a simple ink-pressurization cleaning method can usually restore normal operation.

2. Air Blockage

Air trapped inside the printhead can prevent ink from being properly ejected. If this occurs, ink-pressurization cleaning should be attempted first, as the ink pressure can often push out trapped air. In some cases, however, air bubbles may persist inside the printhead. When this happens, the best course of action is to wait for the bubbles to dissolve naturally into the ink (a process known as degassing).

3. Ink Drying or Contamination

If the printhead is left unused for an extended period without proper humidification, residual ink can dry inside, leading to clogging. Similarly, contaminants can enter the printhead and cause blockages, much like dried ink residue.

· Minor blockages can be cleared using ink-pressurization cleaning.

· Severe cases may require flushing the printhead with a cleaning solution via a syringe. Care should be taken to control the pressure, as excessive force may damage the adhesive holding the nozzle plate, leading to ink leakage.

· If cleaning solutions fail, ultrasonic vibration can be used to dislodge blockages. However, ultrasonic cleaning carries a risk of damaging the printhead and should be used with caution.

Physical contact with printing materials, foreign objects, low-quality wipers, or substandard capping stations and humidification pads can cause irreversible damage to the nozzle plate. Since this type of damage is permanent, prevention is key.

The existing platform is not suitable for further development and does not accommodate users’ needs effectively. The new platform is built with advanced technology, allowing for long-term upgrades and flexibility.

1. Open CreativeStudio and select Creations (Creations).
2. Open the folder and select the design you wish to open and export.
3. Once the design loads, click the Export (Export) button to save the file to your computer.

5. Open Sawgrass Print Utility, select Create (Create) and then Add Files (Add Files).

6. Locate and select the Sawgrass file that we just exported from CreativeStudio.

7. The exported design will now load as a task. From here, you have two options:

For successful DTF printing, we accept the following formats:

• PDF – for vector graphics (e.g. logos, text)

• PNG – for bitmap images (photos, illustrations)

The file must be finalized – we print exactly what we receive. If you need additional help or processing, you can order it separately.

🎨 Color Space – RGB or CMYK?

• RGB: more vibrant, intense colors – most common choice

• CMYK: more accurate color reproduction (e.g. for precise shades)

➡️ We recommend RGB, as most clients want the most vibrant colors possible. The difference between the two is usually minimal, but if you need a very precise shade, please let us know in advance.

• Use 300 dpi

• Prepare the design at actual size (1:1)

• For PNG formats, remove the background if it is not part of the design

⚪ Handling White Color

In DTF printing, white is applied as a separate layer – it is not “default”, but must be specifically included in the design.

• Everything marked as white will be printed in white

• Do not change white to another color

• If you don’t want white, use a transparent background

• Remove backgrounds you don’t want on the final product

• Do not use transparent layers – they are not interpreted correctly

• If using images with gradients, test before printing

For greater efficiency in ordering:

• Arrange graphics on a printing sheet up to 56 cm wide

• Leave at least 4 mm of straight margin between designs for easier cutting

• You can prepare one design and indicate the number of repetitions in the filename (e.g. _logo_5x.png)
