The birds have been chirping for quite some time now, telling us to get rid of plastic bags! A cotton shopping bag is an excellent alternative to all single-use bags. It is large enough for grocery shopping, perfect for carrying home-grown produce to a picnic or party. At the same time, it is the best advertisement for a company, providing long-term exposure and brand/company recognition.

The cotton bag is a staple for screen printers. If your customers are not yet aware of the advantages of cotton bags for advertisement, we have prepared some ideas for you. We want to show you how easy printing on cotton bags can be so that you will be even more enthusiastic about offering them to your clients.

Find a good supplier of shopping bags

Prepare your screens
You must prepare the screen for printing bags differently than for printing T-shirts. Preparing the screen for a T-shirt is correctly aligned, whereas the design you will expose for the bag needs to be inverted so that it appears correctly on the bag. While the T-shirt has an opening for placing it onto the plate from below, the bag, of course, has an opening at the top.

Screen Printing Setup
Insert the prepared, coated, and exposed screen into the printing head. Determine the central alignment and tighten the screen frame so that it is well fixed and does not move during printing. At this point, the logo/design should be facing you.

Before you start printing, you will need to draw a line on the printing plate. This will show you how far up you need to pull the cotton bag so that the print is centrally aligned and positioned the same on each bag.

Printing Cotton Shopping Bags
Water-based Fabric Ink Newtex AF should be applied directly to the screen and then lifted. with TackMax spray adhesive thoroughly spray the printing plate. Then push the cotton bag onto the plate up to the line you drew in the previous step.

Pull the screen down. Using a squeegee, fill the screen printing mesh with ink. Pull the squeegee with the ink across the surface of the mesh twice to get a perfect ink imprint on the cotton bag.

Additionally, Grafco water-based inks. you must dry it in a dryer channel. Air drying is unfortunately no longer sufficient. For wash fastness, the water-based colors must be fixed at a higher temperature. Users of Newtex-One water-based colors are delighted with its coverage and ease of use. Although caution must be exercised with water-based colors compared to plastisol, since they dry in air, working with Grafco water-based colors is easy and pleasant.

The last visit to our supplier of printing inks, Grafco, brought some new developments. Screen printing is and will always be a classic in the field of textile printing. However, the demands in the fashion industry push continuous development, aiming for high-production execution of fashion prints.

Have you ever encountered metallic screen printing on a t-shirt? It is now simple and very practical even for printing larger quantities. To achieve this, you need adhesive and special MYLAR foil in a wide range of colorful metallic shades. The adhesive is suitable for printers using either water-based inks or plastisols.

This time, we received special training conducted specifically for us by the director and owner of Grafco, which employs 45 people.

Mr. Gianpaolo Coin is a chemist at heart, his knowledge is vast, and we haven’t yet encountered a problem he couldn’t first explain and then solve. This time as well, he introduced us to quite a few innovations and improvements that will surely benefit everyone using Grafco inks and additives in screen printing. Positive changes have occurred in the field of water-based inks for textiles, plastisol inks, as well as additives and cleaners.

CONSTANT AND FRESH STOCK

In Treviso, Italy, Grafco’s main office, warehouse, and mixing facility are located. The company also has several branches across Italy. For over 20 years, Gajcom has been ensuring a constant stock of inks and additives for screen printing from the regular range, and for some customers, we also supply custom-made ink.

Currently, the stock levels are good, prices are still competitive, and the quality of the products has already convinced many of you. For those of you considering switching to Grafco products, we can assure you that the transition is not painful. At Gajcom, we successfully made the transition 20 years ago, but it still required a significant amount of effort on our part at that time. In fact, we had to invest more in the change than you will have to now if you decide to make the switch.

We changed our t-shirt printing ink supplier due to the poor availability of the inks we previously used. The Slovenian market was not of interest to Grafco, so we had to negotiate both the import and distribution with them. We are still one of the smaller distributors, but according to Mr. Coin, we are reliable, and he admires our determination and resilience 🙂 Certainly, the satisfaction is mutual. In the picture are Mr. Gianpaolo Coin, the owner of Grafco srl, and Mr. Robert Kaltnekar, the owner of Gajcom d.o.o.

Transfers, or ‘stickers’ as some like to call them, are durable, elastic, and soft to the touch. Their compactness and color shades depend on the manufacturing method and their intended use.

Transfers for cotton products and blends

Recently, the most popular are DTF transfers. The abbreviation DTF stands for ‘direct to film’. Special printers apply water-based ink for textile products directly onto the film. They then add powder (adhesive or binder), dry it all at a higher temperature, and the transfers are ready for use.

DTF printers most commonly use Epson heads, but there is a wide range available on the market. Larger printers allow for better prints and more accurate color generation. Smaller ones are slower and less precise. At Gajcom, we use a printer with a width of 60 cm, which allows us to print up to a width of 56 cm. The prints are vibrant and accurate in color, high resolution, and the printing process is relatively fast. The shades themselves depend on the prepared file and the printer settings. The final appearance of the transfers is also influenced by the consumables used. It matters which DTF color, film, and powder are used – results can vary significantly between different manufacturers.

After several months of testing various printers, colors, powders, and films, and especially after many tests of different settings, we have prepared a set of materials and of course methods for preparing transfers that our customers are satisfied with.

Printing with DTF transfers is possible on:

• white and colored shirts (cotton, polyester, and blends)
• sweatshirts and hoodies
• jackets, pants, and other clothing items
• bags and totes made of cotton or polyester
• umbrellas
• caps
• slippers
• and many other items you wouldn’t think could be printed on

DTF colors are water-based. The printer prints with CMYK colors and of course white, which enables the transfers to be used on colored and dark fabrics.

The film is usually coated on both sides, slightly matte, and suitable for hot peeling. Always follow the instructions provided with each order.

Sublimation transfers

Sublimation is also a way of printing with transfers. Sublimation ink does not include white color, so we only sublimate on white or light products. The sublimation itself is suitable only for polyester products or those coated with polyester.

Sublimation is the softest print, as the color completely vaporizes into the product, and the print is not felt. At the same time, it’s an extremely durable print, of course, if you print correctly and on the cleanest possible polyester. On some products, colors might fade in the sun, but this depends on the products themselves, not the ink. For example, there are two types of photo panels (aluminum plates coated with photo coating that are easily sublimated). Those for indoor use have been tested for durability up to 100 years indoors (normal light exposure), but would fade in the sun. Therefore, there are also those for outdoor use, which have a slightly more expensive coating and are suitable for use on buildings and in general, as informational and directional signs.

Sublimation is primarily used to print flags, sports jerseys, and lanyards, but at Gajcom, we use sublimation for printing on pre-made t-shirts, umbrellas, jackets, bags, as well as some other products such as sublimation mugs, mouse pads, keychains, clocks, and other promotional products.

When you need to print several hundred thickened t-shirts, you’ll most likely achieve this with screen printing.

1. Puff Printing

Use plastisol ink Avantex and an additive for the 3D effect. You will certainly use the Clear.

For the underlying color. The color will nicely puff up in the drying channel. If you dry it correctly, it will be durable for a long time and pleasant to the touch.

1. Thick-layer printing with multi-layer application

Based on our customers’ experiences, this printing method is more popular. The printing process is more complex and time-consuming. The more time you take, the better the effect will be.

Your base will be underlined with a transparent color Clear. With one or two strokes, you will apply the ideal base on the t-shirt for the most demanding prints. Dry the Clear under the intermediate dryer. Then apply the 3D colors.

You will need the color Avantex, for white we recommend the color SuperFlash. You will add 50% transparent base for the 3D effect or thick-layer printing using the layering system. To ensure each application is as thick as possible, use a screen with a 35 mesh and capillary film at least 300 microns.

Grafco Cleaners are intended for use during and after printing.

1. Removes even the most dried-on ink from the mesh
It happens too often that printing ink is not cleaned well enough after printing, resulting in the ink
drying on the printing mesh.
2. Removes burnt emulsion
They easily remove even the most burnt-on emulsion from the mesh, which regular cleaners
cannot.
3. Degreases the mesh
All screen washing agents are greasy, and if you don’t degrease the screens before reuse,
the emulsion won’t be applied evenly and optimally, which is a big factor for a perfect print.
4. They work on their own
Simply apply them to the screen, wait a few minutes, and rinse with water under pressure.
Now that your screens are clean and degreased, it’s time to prepare them for printing with top-quality

universal emulsion
WHD . You can use it for all types of screen printing inks (water-based, plastisol, solvent, UV, etc.). Simply mix it with the hardener and coat both sides of the screen.
